You should be blowing out candles

by Jacklynn MacKenzie

You should be blowing out candles on your birthday cake today -
Closing your eyes, and making a wish for something special to come
Your way.

I remember your first birthday Ken, and in the town that we were living,
We invited all the neighborhood kids -
You couldn't understand why all the presents to you they were giving!

I still can see you sitting in your little high-chair
Eating the birthday cake I made -
Frosting covered your face and hair,
And in my memory, that picture will never fade.

You were never too much trouble, when you were a child -
You had a friendly, quiet manner, and always a ready smile.

In school, your teachers liked you, you never caused a problem;
But the homework that they gave you, sometimes you had trouble solving.

You struggled through to grade eleven, then attended trade school for a course,
That hopefully would give you work, in the field of your choice.

Then two years after graduation, the most tragic day I'll ever know -
I lost you very suddenly, I watched your young life go.
Though doctors and nurses tried to save you, there was nothing they could do -
And on that day, that tragic day, a part of me died too.

There is no bond in all the world like that of a Mother and Child,
But I thank God that he lent you to me to love for a little while.

There never is a day goes by that I don't think of you -
My baby, my boy, my child, my young man, I'll never forget you my whole life through.

But God is watching over you now, and you're happy and carefree,
And I know someday I'll see you again - I'll hold onto you and you'll hold onto me.

Today you'd be blowing out 33 candles, and making a wish as before;
And I know that there in Heaven your wish will come true for sure.

Happy 33rd birthday Kenny, we all love and miss you so very much.
