Visiting Britain
Each year, millions of people visit London, and Stratford on Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare.

But there are many other parts of Britain to consider. The United Kingdom is actually four countries - England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Each is divided into smaller 'County' areas.

Many have their own culture and identity going back over hundreds of years. Counties are local government areas, with there own elected representatives.

Here in brief is what you can find.

ENGLAND

There are many ancient historical cities - York and Chester still with their old city walls, Lincoln and Bath, and Oxford and Cambridge famous for their ancient universities. Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool and Bristol are all world-class cities with theatres, art galleries, and museums.

Lincoln
If you like green countryside, there is much to choose from. The 'West Country' - Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall counties - is full of beautiful small villages, old cottages with 'thatched' (straw) roofs, ancient churches and gentle green hills.
The 'Lake District' with its mountains and lakes draws millions of visitors. They come to see a beautiful mixture of lakes, mountains, and places connected with the poet William Wordsworth, and the children's writer Beatrix Potter.
Marlbourgh
Try not to go in July or August - it is very busy then.

The Pennine hills in Yorkshire, Lancashire and Derbyshire are wild and beautiful, often with 'dry stone walls' - walls around fields built without cement.

East Anglia - low hills or very flat - has a special attraction with windmills, and many old buildings from the 'Middle Ages'.
Large man-made lakes with interconnecting rivers, called the 'Broads', offer excellent boating. Motor boats can be hired for a day or week.

If you enjoy boats then you may like to also consider hiring a "barge", a special boat for use on the British canal system or look at George's Canal Boating in UK and Europe A comprehensive and helpful page

This activity is most expensive in July and August.

There are many Adventure Theme Parks around the country, such as Alton Towers and Thorpe Park

WALES

A land of history and beauty, where many speak the ancient Welsh language.
Wales views
A place of castles, and mountains, waterfalls, and lakes as well as old industry works you can visit - slate-mining and coal-mining.
In the north is the area called Snowdonia, where Snowdon is only one of the towering mountains.
The south includes the 'Brecon Beacons' mountain range and the beautiful Pembrokeshire coastline.

The castles of Wales are famous, many in excellent condition, and all open for visits.
Caernarfon Castle is perhaps the most well-known, built by King Edward 1 of England against the Welsh of that time.

Wales is home to many steam railways for tourists, "Great little trains of Wales" or "Welsh Highland Railway" , including the mountain railway which climbs Mount Snowdon.
The Welsh are famous for love of music, song and dance. Each year, the International Musical Eisteddfod is held in the town of Llangollen.

NORTHERN IRELAND and EIRE, the REPUBIC OF IRELAND

Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. Southern Ireland – the Republic of Ireland – is an independent country and is not part of Britain. Both are interesting and beautiful. Despite what you may have heard on the news, terrorist troubles were never very common, and now with the peace agreement, there is very little trouble.

Information on Northern Ireland (Ulster) can be obtained from the British Tourist Authority. Information on the Republic of Ireland from:

Thought for the day:

All have done wrong and all are far from being as good as God. But God is kind and makes them right with himself. It is a gift. He does it because Christ Jesus paid the price to set them free.
