Visiting Britain
Where to stay

Youth Hostels

The YOUTH HOSTEL ASSOCIATION have hostels around England and Wales, including seven in London. At busy times, it is best to book in advance. But often, you may just arrive and find a room.
There are similar associations covering hostels in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Republic of Ireland - addresses also shown below. They offer good cheap places to stay.

It is necessary to become a member. However, it is possible to join at the time of arrival at a hostel and pay an additional sum a night towards membership at different hostels, until the full membership has been paid. Students with an International Student Identity Card may receive a discount.

If you are a member of the Youth Hostel Association in your own country already, then your membership covers you to stay at 5000 hostels in over 60 countries. If you expect to stay at a Youth Hostel here, join in your own country first if possible.

It is possible to book in advance at the seven London Youth Hostels

It is also possible to book in advance to British Youth Hostels from many city Youth Hostels in other countries.

The Youth Hostel Association also arrange activity holidays and adventure courses in climbing, caving, canoeing, windsurfing, etc.
You can find more information by writing to the St. Albans address below.

Other Hostels

There are other cheap accommodation hostels in London and other cities. Some are advertised in the British Tourist Authority 'The Guide'
see our 'How to find more information page'

Cheap Accommodation London Area

Happy Homes

'Happy Homes' is one of London's leading bed and breakfast/accommodation agencies. They are a family-run agency that places overseas tourists and foreign language students into bed and breakfast accommodation and private family homestays in central and south-west London.

BED AND BREAKFAST, and farm accommodation

Also a very cheap way to live. Around the country, thousands of houses and farms offer bed and breakfast. At busy times, it may be difficult to find room without booking first, but often, you can just knock on the door and find space.

Houses and farms

Houses and farms offering bed and breakfast will have a sign outside, which may read, 'Accommodation', 'Bed and Breakfast', 'B & B', or even just 'Vacancies'. Not all will accept children.

Most towns have a Tourist Information Centre. They can help you find 'bed and breakfast' or other types of accommodation in their area. Some also offer a 'Book-a-Bed-Ahead' scheme, so that you can arrange accommodation in a new area as you travel.

Bed and breakfast websites are included on our main page.

GUEST HOUSES AND HOTELS

Guest houses are larger than bed and breakfast houses, but smaller than hotels. They will usually be cheaper than hotels. They may sometimes offer bed and breakfast too. Expect to pay about £20 -£30 a night for a guest house, depending on area, and time of year.

Hotel prices will cost more, depending on season, and standard of accommodation. There are several websites which gives lists of hotel accommodation in Britain and Wales. Of course, being listed on a website, does not mean that they are the best, or the cheapest. Some hotels will have star ratings from the AA, RAF, or Tourist Boards.

You will find hotels and guest houses listed in Yellow Page phone directories (your library may have some). British Tourist Authority offices around the world may keep some lists of hotels and guest houses. Tourist Information Centres around Britain will also have details.

Motels

There are motels at a number of motorway service stations. Prices for these do not usually include meals (which would be available in the motorway service area). Forte Travelodge, for example, operate a number of motels, and charge between about £35 to £50 per night, per room, depending on area of the country. Each room has one double bed, one single sofa, and one pullout bed, and can therefore take 2 adults and 2 children, or 3 adults and 1 child. For several people, this is quite cheap.

Forte Travelodge offer a freephone booking service with UK on 0800 850 950 7am - 10 pm 7 days a week.

Other companies offer a similar service.

CAMPING AND CARAVANNING

Camp and caravan sites are common in tourist areas, and will be sign-posted. Ask for the British Tourist Authority free booklet 'Camping and Caravan Parks', from the nearest BTA office to you, listed on our 'How to find more information' page.

The UK Camping and caravanning site recommends various camping and caravanning sites.
