On Holding On
I hold onto my childhood.
I clutch onto my past.
I revel in my memories,
Wanting them to last.

I hold onto my children.
I treasure many things.
I like to control the present,
The security it brings.

I clasp onto my image,
Hope with longing for my dreams.
I depend upon my intellect,
On all the worth it means.

I get trapped by quirky habits,
The way things should be done.
I know what makes us happy;
"Fix", instead of help, a needy one.

I think that I am balanced,
Know all about belief.
I have the week all sorted out,
To bring some light relief.

I try to listen to my friends,
To gain a broader point of view.
I ask God for His wisdom,
To know what's really true.

If I'm flying free, not trapped,
A contented heart will show.
In this task of letting go,
Others learn, themselves, to grow.

I won't be gripped by judgment,
Temper, or be scared of change.
I'll cope with peoples characters;
Admit "my" outcomes, out of range.

When we face the loss of body function
Or have a family member die,
Are we secure enough to let them go?
Will we accept or just deny?

Can we let others be themselves
And still know how much to care,
Not cutting ourselves off;
But not "having" to be there?

To let others have identity,
We won't protect them sore,
But realize control is fear exhibiting.
To "let go" is to love much more.

So, I will choose to give God my fear
And live the future that can be.
I will take each day and cherish it,
Facing life's reality.
