Try and see! A beautiful verse in the Old Testament part of the Bible was written by David, a shepherd who became a king. In a collection of songs and poems, called 'Psalms', he wrote: "Taste and see that the Lord is good." Psalm 34 People from every country and background find that the Bible speaks to them. It is as if God speaks to them directly into their hearts. Here are the experiences of two people from different parts of the world:
"While I was in college, a student gave me a copy of the New Testament. I read some pages from the gospel of Matthew. My interest grew and I began to read more and more, and so finished the four Gospels. During that time of my study, I felt as if God was speaking to me. I experienced the love of God. I did not know till then that God is so merciful as to forgive a sinner like me. When I realised it, I knelt down in my room and begged God to forgive my sins."

"My life was in a terrible mess. I dropped out of school after my father died when I was fourteen. I then spent most of my time in bed, and the rest in front of the TV. I was very violent and tried to kill myself. When I was 17, I beat my mother up, and so she finally threw me out of the house. As I got on the train to leave, a friend handed me a New Testament that another friend had given her. I read the Good News, and I gave my life to Jesus. Overnight I became a different person! I now help my mother with her business. She too is now a Christian, and I'm going to college." Tanya Why is the Bible different? It is not men's attempts to write about God. It is God speaking to men. Although the human authors were different, there is one real Author behind all of them. It does not speak just to one culture or language group. Everyone, anywhere in the world, finds that it speaks to them. It is the MAKER'S HANDBOOK. When you buy equipment, you also receive a maker's handbook. If it is for a car, it will tell you such things as what type of oil to use in the engine, and which parts need regular checks. If it is for an electrical machine, it will tell you what voltage to use. If you decide that you do not need the handbook, your car may go well for some time. You may decide to replace the oil, but say 'any oil will be OK'. So you put in cooking oil! Result? Dead motor! God has given us the Bible as the MAKER'S HANDBOOK for our lives. Because He made us He knows what is best for us. He knows how we can live best. He can set us free to be ourselves. It is worth checking out what the Bible is all about!
