Prayer-Poems for the Day
by

Elaine Hardt

Do you recite a bedtime prayer?
Some people will be familiar with the words of this little bedtime prayer that Mama taught us to say. At the end we'd add, "God bless.." and name each sister, brother, parent, friend, etc. before adding the AMEN.

A BEDTIME PRAYER
Now, I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
If I should die before I wake
I pray the Lord my soul to take.

I thought there should be a simple little morning prayer-poem to start the day, so I wrote this little piece. It's good for adults, as well as children.

A MORNING PRAYER
Now I wake up from the night
And thank the Lord for morning light.
He'll be with me through the day,
In my work and in my play,
In the sunshine, in the rain,
In His presence I remain.
AMEN.

As children we were taught to pause before eating and give thanks to God for our food. This is the Table Prayer we learned:

GIVING THANKS FOR OUR FOOD.
God is great, and God is good.
And we thank Him for our food.
By His hand we all are fed,
Give us, Lord, our daily bread.

Anytime is a good time to stop and acknowledge that He is God, and we are not. The mystery of the Universe, the big questions about Creation, the seriousness of Sin, the awesome truth of Forgiveness through Jesus' death on the cross, and the awesome reality of life after death....all of these great issues are ours to ponder and, ultimately, trust and believe in the God Who reveals Himself as love in the Bible. He hears the children's prayer, and we can approach Him as simply as a child.
