| Grandpa's Desk by Jacklynn MacKenzie |

Grandpa's desk was a busy spot, From morning till close of day; Here he sat and played solitaire, Here he figured out his budget For all the bills he had to pay. He'd sit for hours rolling his own, His cigarettes he loved to smoke; And listen to C J C B To the latest fiddle tune that was out. So many little drawers his desk had, So many nooks and crannies, I loved to poke around in them - Sometimes I would even find candy. Paper clips, old letters, old receipts, Postcards from afar; Buttons of all colors, In the corner in a jar. Pencil stubs, erasers, staples, Notebooks and papers galore; And in the large drawers below, There was so much more. Christmas Cards from years gone by, Photograph albums and such, Special linen napkins, Grandma didn't use very much. Monopoly game, tiddly winks, The games I loved to play, With Grandma every evening, before the end of day. After school, my favorite place was sitting at Grandpa's desk, I'd study and write till my homework was done, And would never leave his spot in a mess. Inside his desk was an inkwell of glass, A bottle of pretty turquoise ink, A quill pen, just sat begging to be used, And use it, I did in a wink. How I loved to write with his quill pen, How neat my writing would be; How important I felt, sitting there at his desk, Pondering what my future might be. I can still see my Grandpa Smoke rings rising from his pipe -- Still see the cards upon his desk As he played solitaire each night Memories etched within my mind and heart, Memories I will always hold dear - Of that old desk, that old home, With Grandpa and Grandma, always near. |
