| To My Son
Written by Debra W. Higley |

I know the lady who lives next door, I have seen her near and far. I have seen her laugh and I have seen her cry. I have seen her just sit, and look up at the skies. I know that each night before she goes to bed, she says a little pray to her Lord. "As we sleep, Oh Lord we pray, that we will see another bright day. I know that soon he will leave and I hope, Oh Lord, You and I will help keep him from running astray." Then she walks silently to his room where he lies sound asleep. She sits down by his side and as she runs her hand across his cheek she says to him, "I know some day you will leave, but I also know that before I sleep, the sleep of eternity , you will return and hold me as I sleep in your arms , and run your hand across my cheeks, and say to me, 'Oh Mother dear, you kept me from the evils and helped me to see the beauty of earths great pleasures. I grew to be a man of wisdom, and with a heart of understanding. So Mother dear, I heard your prayers and I know that someday I will be the one who prays for my child, and I will run my hands across his cheeks and say to him, 'This comes from a great woman whom in time, you will meet.' " And yes, my dear, I do know the lady next door, for she is I. And the beautiful son, whom she has ran her hands down his cheeks, is you, my friend, my son. |
