When I was ten

By Jean Vann

When I was small and looked ahead, beyond 10 I could not see.

For at ten I would become grown up, or so it seemed to me.

Then ever more new heights ahead beckoned ever on,

and at 18 it seemed adulthood had come.

I thought one day I would be so wise,

and adult too childish fears passed and life begun anew.

But as the years have rolled away more childlike I've become.

For in retirement there's more time to enjoy a bit of fun.

So as I frolic through my day I can comfort me with this word

"You must become as a little child to see the Kingdom of God"
