About The Nice Man

Hi there, Mr. God.
It's me, Little Andy.
Can I ask ya somthun?

Today, a man, I didn't know,
Died; like my grandpa done.
'Cept there were men there
That were soldiers, I guess.

Daddy said they were wearin'
What he called 'military dress'.
(It wasn't really a dress.)

There were flags and loud music,
And flowers like grandpa had.
I didn't know him, Mr. God.
But, boy, I feel so sad.

Daddy just shakes his head
And momma's eyes are all red.
They say he was a great great man.
But, like grandpa, he's dead.

Everything, on the TV,
Is about this nice man.
I 'cided, I won't watch my cartoons.
Daddy says I'm being a 'spectful little man.

He has a box, just like grandpa.
His had a flag on it, too.
Daddy says he earned his
In somthun' called WW2.

I see the soldiers all got guns.
Are they gonna have a fight?
Is there somebody gonna steal the nice man
While we sleep, at night?

Maybe they should put him in the ground,
Like they did my grandpa.
But, they put him in a 'brary room.
'Least, that's what I saw.

I seen pictures of the nice man.
He was really really old.
Daddy says he forgets, like grandma,
And he died from a real bad cold.

Grandma forgets lots of things.
Did he do that, too?
So, he musta forgot his Vick's, at night;
Like grandma might do.

But, Mr. God, I was wonderin'.
Is he there, with you, right now?
Or, is he, still, in that box?
I know he's goin' to heaven.
I wanted to know how.

Mr. God, I gotta go.
I'm jest a little guy.
I don't un'erstand a lot.
Will a plane bring him to you, in the sky?

Wud ya tell him hi, for me,
And tell him that I'm sure glad -
'Cause he will be up there; with Jesus and
Grandpa, and Jesus' Dad?

I know you're pro'bly busy
Gettin' him settled, up there.
People are gonna miss him, down here.
But, daddy says, "He's in your care."

Well, hi to Jesus and his mom.
I hope ya got some jelly bean candy.
Momma says he likes that.
Bye, from Little Andy.
