| Thy Rod and Thy Staff | Psalms 23:4 |
|
In the valley lush and green, Perhaps at a mountain base, Little lambs romp and play As the shepherd watches from His place. Some play while others feed And one will, sometimes, stray; Not really disobeying ~ Just forgetting, like children do, at play. If they wander to the edge, As a lamb will sometimes do, The shepherd seeks it out; This little lamb so new. In the verse it tells us THY rod and THY staff, there are two; 1. a staff for gentle nudging, like a cane. 2. the rod for correction will do. Unlike cattle, the sheep are not driven. They follow as they are led, Using the crook of the staff; Sometimes, a little nudge upon the head. But, if one should wander And be scared and alone The rod, gently applied; Used as a learning stone. But, if the lamb should be given To a wandering way, The rod, in the teacher's hand, Will teach the lamb not to stray. Sometimes the rod is used To cause the lamb some pain, Before he can carry The lamb back home again ... The staff, for gentle nudging, To keep the lamb safe and sound; But the rod of obedience, When the straying one is found. The Lord, Himself, by His staff, Nudges for our good ~ But allows harsh circumstances To make us obey the way we should. So, if, at times, we heed Him not And correction we deserve, 'Tis His special way Of protecting and preserve ... With His love, His staff. He, Himself, had sought us With His precious blood, His crook. He painfully bought us And, with His rod, His grace He keeps us. Which ever He uses is up to us. |
