A Walk along the Seashore

by

Jacklynn MacKenzie

Have you ever walked along the seaside,
Etched your name within the sand;
Then watched as the tide erased your name feeling as if your very soul was swept out to sea with it?
What is it about the seaside that is so inviting,
so peaceful, which causes us to ponder about life, and about our place in life?
This water, everchanging, sometimes raging, sometimes calm;
This shoreline, never the same -
each day, new treasures, just waiting to be discovered.
So many treasures, abundant treasures, if we only take the time to recognize them.
Not the kind of treasures a rich man would find pleasure in, not the kind you can put in the bank; but nevertheless treasures - rocks, shells of every imaginable type - white ones, blue ones, brown, grey, a myriad of colors; and the smallest of creatures from the sea -- the snail, sand dollar, mussel, clam, such an abundance of nature's gifts lay here at our feet. Tiny pieces of colored glass, worn smooth by the ocean current.

I wonder, do others ever stop to think just how wonderful they are - these precious gifts from God -- these tiny gifts, which fill us with such wonder and awe?
How did they get here? How were they so uniquely and beautifully formed? I ponder, I think, I try to comprehend His greatness - He who can fashion a tiny seashell, or a mountain so high, or an ocean so deep.
It is so difficult to comprehend I do not question why. I just accept that they are gifts of nature given freely to us by God-for us to marvel at and enjoy.
My home is filled with rocks of every color and size - in jars, in baskets, arranged so carefully and painstakingly, bottles filled with broken glass from the seashore, tiny snailshells - oh, how happy I am when I gaze upon them and think about them; and knowing how much I appreciate these tiny gifts from God, how much more I appreciate his even more wonderful gifts to me. He has given to me a wonderful husband, beautiful children and grandchildren, my friends and family.
All things that come from God are good, be they small and seemingly insignificant, or or be they larger and apparently more significant. I consider the seashore my sanctuary where I may go to worship and praise my God. I consider the log on the beach as my pew, and the great ocean beyond in its roar, as the waves cascade upon the rocks and sand, I consider the sermon, my sermon from my God. He speaks to me in this place of solitude and peace, and I shall come here always to listen to His voice.
