Austin Lost the Race

by
Elaine Hardt
Austin might have won, but someone painted the arrows the wrong way at the intersection of Civic Center Drive and Loos. Leading the pack he was making good time.

Might as well rename that street "Lose" because a ten year-old boy turned the wrong way at the third corner in Saturday's race. This was our town's second annual 10K and Fun Run, and it raised money for several local charities. The weekly newspaper quoted the promoter of the race saying that, despite the small glitch, the town benefits from the event and next year it will be bigger and better.

We can hope the arrow-painting committee does better next time. Good intentions and sweaty exertions are just not enough when it comes to something important like winning prizes. Children deserve accurate directions.

Are things much better in the adult world of painting arrows? Are directions in the 'Race of Life' clearly marked out so that runners keep to the straight and narrow? Or has a certain Chief Mischief-maker thrown in some confusion?

The Bible clearly tells us the way to Heaven. Even a youngster can read John 3:16 or one of the many other verses that tell how to be forgiven and saved, and ask Jesus into his or her heart.

Sad to say, there are people who have decided to improve upon the simple directions, and have added on religious rules and traditions. They've painted arrows of their own design and are pointing people away from truth.

These misleading arrows can be so colorful, so fascinating that people slow down or stop to admire the unique artwork. Some will turn away from the One Way.

There is not a variety of paths to take us to God. Any arrow pointing the wrong way is, in fact, dishonest. Whether painted on the street in ignorance or carelessness or rebellion we must be careful. Any philosophy or theology that does not hold to the Bible is guilty of misleading people. Eternal life with Him is the prize, and today each of us is one day closer to being There.
