Why Katie Why?by Sonja Thalheimer |

Dear Katie, I love you and I really miss you. I can't believe that yesterday you were at that New Year's party. Alive. Why did you have to play with the fireworks? Why were you even with those jerks? They aren't your friends. I was at Jenna's house when Mommy came over. Her eyes were all red from crying and the first thing she did was grab me and smother me in a big hug. She just took me from Jenna's house, not even saying "thanks for having her" to Jenna's mom or anything and dragged me to the car. And then she told me. "Katie and some other people at the party were playing around with fireworks. One of them was obviously defective - it exploded on Katie." Of course, as soon as Mom told me I started sobbing also, I mean you're my big sister. I know that some of our friends thought it was weird how close we were but you were my best friend. I know that I'm only 11 and you're 16 but I still really loved you. Who else could I ask all my embarrassing questions without being embarrassed? Who else would actually tell me that what I was wearing totally didn't work and still live to help me pick a new outfit? Who else would drive my friends and me out to the movies and snacks and everywhere? I can't believe you're gone, Katie. I really can't. I'm sort of expecting you to jump out of the walls, playing another one of your practical jokes, and say, "You guys! I'm here! I'm alive!" and then we'd all laugh hysterically 'cause we'd be so glad that you're ALIVE! The funeral is going to be tomorrow, Katie. I know you aren't going to like it; you were never one for all that mushy stuff. All of your friends are going to come and a bunch of my friends too. Some of them didn't even know you - but they'd heard me talk about you. Katie, I can't believe you were so stupid as to play with those fireworks. I bet someone at the party dared you - I know you can never refuse a dare. I just wish that you had never gone to that party. We really can't change anything now though. I'm really sorry that you're gone and I will always remember you. When I asked Mommy how I could send this to you she said, "Mary, just burn it and let the ashes fly towards your sister's new home in the sky." When I asked if you were an angel now Mom said, "She's in heaven, sweetie, and hopefully you won't know for awhile what happens there but I can guarantee you that she's happy." So, you're in heaven, Katie. I hope you like it there, and I hope you make some friends. Please don't even forget me, as I will never forget you. Until we meet again, Your little sister, Mary |
